Improv Game: The Rant Conductor

(The lighting is bad. And it will be until we’re not poor, so bear with me…)
This improv game is The Rant Conductor. (Other names may be Rant Symphony / Rant Orchestra / Emotional Orchestra.) Just as the name implies you have one improvisor “conduct” the other improvisors as they explore an emotional state based on a suggestion the audience.
PROS:
- You get several ask-fors, or audience suggestions, in a row right away. This makes a good opener/ice-breaker, because it warms up the crowd and gets several of them participating at once.
- Theoretically, the numbers of players in the game are limitless as long as you have a conductor that can manage them.
- Fun and fast laughs as the conductor hams it up during his/her entrance.
- This is a great chance for improvisors to explore their “Emotional Ten.”
- Plays well as a character game.
CONS:
- Individual rants are easily lost as the “orchestra” comes to a crescendo.
MISC:
- You could easily performs this as a Rant Duet with two players and a dueling banjo vibe.
- This is a great game to practice listening while speaking and sharing the stage.
- Call additional players forward for solos during the performance is fun.
